Soaring to new heights with 3D digitization
Pascal Thoma is a passionate and successful model builder and pilot. After numerous achievements, including becoming Swiss Champion in 2014 and 2017 and winning a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championship in RC Jet Flying, he embarked on a new project: the reconstruction of the Fiat G91.
We used computed tomography to non-destructively scan the 1:72 scale model kit and completely digitize it in 3D. This data greatly simplified the design of details in CAD. Pascal Thoma faced several challenges in this project: despite the model’s 3.4 m length and 2.8 m wingspan, it had to be built as light as possible to stay within the maximum competition weight of 20 kg. To achieve this, he used the MJF 3D printing process to manufacture the entire main landing gear. Only critical areas needed reinforcement with carbon fiber and aluminum. This alone resulted in a weight saving of 2.5kg compared to conventional manufacturing.
In August 2023, Pascal Thoma participated in the 14th Jet World Masters in Italy with the aircraft he designed and built himself, achieving 5th place. We are proud to have played a part in this impressive story.
